Everything You Need to Know Before Becoming a Mompreneur
Becoming a mompreneur is extremely exciting. I love being my own boss and working the hours I want to work. Being a mompreneur gives me the flexibility to take an active role in my children’s lives. I am available to them from the moment they wake up, to the moment they go to bed. I get to choose when I work, and I like working around my family’s schedule, so I can spend the most time with them.
Building a freelance business allows you to leverage your skills in your career and grow it as big as you can imagine. You are fully in charge of your hours, schedule, flexibility, terms and conditions, and rates. However, there are some things you need to know before you officially start your own small business. I have shared some ideas you might want to consider before becoming a mompreneur.

Do your research – figure out what industry you want to get into and what type of business you want to start
Write down a list of your skills and interest. What kind of hobbies do you have? What do you enjoy doing when you are by yourself? Are you crafty, or are you handy? Maybe you are a great writer or photographer. Or maybe you are great with social media and could become a social media manager for bloggers. These are things you can turn into your small business. The options are endless. Make sure you write down EVERYTHING that you enjoy doing and see if there’s a connection between them. If you cannot think of any ideas, I will be sharing some side hustle ideas later in this post.
Consider your skills and experience – can you see yourself running this type of business every day for the next few years?
Now that you have written down your list of skills and interests. You have to really think about how you can turn your skills and interest into a business. Think about what some problems were along the way of your journey when you learned these skills. How can you help others solve a problem? How can you be of service? And consider if this is something you can see yourself running for the next few years. I highly recommend you write these down and think about them.
Make a plan with strategies and goals
As a visual person, I recommend you write down your goals, strategies, and how you’re going to measure success. Nothing beats a clear written plan. Certain times I write my ideas and plans down on the back of my electricity bill, other times I write them down in Notion or Goodnotes. I love using Notion because it has multiple templates you can use to create a good workflow or path. And I like using GoodNotes when I want to write handwritten notes. It is crucial you have a written plan from beginning to end and stick to it. This does not mean you cannot change your plan over time. You can adjust it as you go.
Educate yourself, and continue to keep educating yourself.
Being a photographer, I will never stop educating myself. I have spent so much money on education because a true entrepreneur never stops learning. Regardless of the industry that you are in, there are always new ways to improve yourself and your business. Make sure to invest in education to help you get to the next level. The more you know, the more money you can earn by sharing your knowledge with others. It is crucial you become an expert in your field.
Check out your competition
When you start a small business, it’s important to check out your competition. This can give you some great ideas on how to market yourself and help you determine a fair price point for your products or services. Take a look at what they’re doing well and see if there’s anything you can learn from them.
Make sure you do not copy someone else’s business. It is important that your business is yours and comes from you alone. Checking out your competition is just there to check on how to differentiate yourself and how to find ways to stand out. You want your small business to be original and authentic. Use what you learn from your competition as inspiration to create something uniquely your own.
Find your ideal client
Before you start your small business, it’s important to identify your ideal client. Who are you going to be marketing to? What needs do they have that your business can address? By taking the time to answer these questions, you’ll be in a much better position to succeed.
Your ideal client should be someone who is likely to need and appreciate your products or services. They should also be able to afford what you’re offering. Additionally, it’s helpful if they live or work nearby so that you can easily reach them with your marketing efforts.
Once you’ve identified your ideal client, you can start thinking about how to reach them with your marketing. What channels will work best for reaching them? What kind of messaging will resonate with them? By taking the time to understand your ideal client, you’ll be in a much better position to succeed.
It is also important to not compare yourself with your ideal client. You may not even be your own ideal client. But it is important to gather all information you can find about your ideal client, so you know how to market to them.
How can you stand out from your competition?
In today’s business world, it’s more important than ever to stand out from your competitors. There are a number of ways you can do this, but one of the most important is by offering more value. What can you do that no one else can? Do you have a unique skill or knowledge that you can offer? Can you provide a higher level of customer service? Or do you have a product that is simply better than what your competition has to offer? There are many ways you can offer more value than your competitor. For example, you can offer a money-back guarantee, free shipping, first-time-user discounts, or a freebie with every purchase. You can also specialize in a particular niche market that your competitor doesn’t serve. By thinking about ways to stand out from your competition, you will be better able to attract customers and grow your business.
Work/life balance
Starting a new business is a big commitment. Not only do you have to put in the work to get your business off the ground, but you also need to be able to maintain your business and keep a healthy work/life balance. Can you realistically put in the hours needed to get your business off the ground while still managing your other responsibilities? If you have young children, for example, can you arrange for childcare while you work? Or if you work from home, can you set aside some quiet time each day to focus on your business? These are all things to consider before you start and to communicate with those involved. By taking the time to plan ahead, you can help ensure that your business venture is successful and that your work/life balance remains healthy.
Are you organized?
Being an organized entrepreneur is key! Moms are notoriously good at being organized—after all, they have to be in order to keep their families running smoothly. If you’re not an organized person, becoming a mompreneur is probably going to become a challenge for you. Luckily, there are plenty of resources available to help you get organized and set up a successful business. From online courses to organizing software, there’s no excuse not to get your business off the ground! So if you’re ready to take the plunge, be sure to do your research and get organized first. It’ll make all the difference in the world.
Make sure you consider childcare
Childcare is one of the most important challenges working mothers face. If you’re planning on starting a business, it’s essential to have someone who can watch your kids while you work. You might be able to work out a schedule with your partner or a family member. If this is not possible, you’ll need to consider the cost of childcare. Childcare can be expensive, but it’s a necessary expense if you want to be a successful mompreneur. There are many resources available to help you find quality childcare at an affordable price. With a little bit of research, you can find the perfect solution for your family.
Make sure you work on your self-discipline
Mompreneurs need to be self-disciplined. As a mom, we already have a lot of tasks on our place, so it can be tempting to take a break, while you should be working. But if you want your business to succeed, you need to be able to stay focused and get work done—even when you don’t feel like it, or your kids are trying their best to distract you. So make sure you show up when you scheduled your work hours and any other things you have scheduled, too, of course!
Take control of your time management
It is very important you will handle your time management from the beginning. Mothers already know how to juggle a lot at once, but adding a business can take up a lot of your time. This might mean you will have to work during your kids’ naptime or after bedtime. Make sure you keep track of every hour of your day and stick to your calendar. If you have planned to work 2 hours on a certain project, make sure you give it your full attention within that time frame. Also make sure to schedule a time to wind down, take care of yourself, and review your day in the end.

Make sure that you have a strong support system in place before taking the plunge into mompreneurship. Communicate with them and tell them that you are serious about starting your own business and would love their support. Whether it’s physical or mental support.
